TARANAKI TEACHERS

MEETING OF THE INSTITUTE. A general meeting of the Taranaki Teachers’ Institute was held at Stratford on Saturday. Mr. W. A. Curteis, vicepresident, presided over a good attendance. Before proceedings commenced the chairman referred to the sad death of Mr. W. V. L. Stanton and moved that a letter of sympathy be sent to his parents. The motion was carried in silence. Mr. O. J. Howarth wrote resigning his position of president and of representative to the forthcoming conference. Mr. W. A. Curteis was elected president for the remainder of the year, and Mr. T. Thomas representative to the conference; Mr. L. J. Furrie was elected vice-president in place of Mr. Curteis. A letter was received from the secretary of the New Zealand Education Institute asking that inquiries be made as to the cost of maintaining an average family and forwarding schedules to be filled in for May and June. These were taken by some of the teachers present. The Ohura sub-branch wrote enclosing a list of their officers elected at their recent annual meeting as follows: President, Mr. C. A. Young; vice-presi-dent, Miss M. Breen; secretary and treasurer, Miss J. Earp; committee, Misses Hunt, Bayly, Barak; Messrs. Smith, Graham and McClure. Mr. T. Thomas was elected advocate for teachers at the Grading Appeal Board in place of Mr. Howarth, and Mr. F. W. Mason was elected to represent the primary schools on- the Taranaki Rugby Union. Nine new members were elected. The order paper of remits for the forthcoming conference was discussed for the guidance of the institute’s reMr. L. C. Bicheno then read a very interesting paper on the aims in teaching the various subjects of the school syllabus. He was accorded a hearty vote of thanks on the motion of Mr. T. Thomas, seconded by Mr. L. J. Furrie, and as the hour was getting late, discussion on the paper was postponed to the next meeting to be held at Hawera.
