FALL OVER A CLIFF.
A REMARKABLE ESCAPE. Christchurch, April 27. Falling from a cliff over 100 ft. high Mr. J. Roberts, an old Barrytown resident, 78 years of age, had a terrible experience and a remarkable escape from death on Tuesday. Mr. Roberts and Mr. W. Shannon (another old resident) and a young girl, .-named Mundy, were travelling to Barrytown, near Greymouth, in a trap driven by Mr. T. Cargill. When they reached the Ten Mile Bluff a bag of chaff fell out of the trap, and Mr. Roberts volunteered to get the bag back. He was dismounting when Mr. Cargill moved to get the bag himself. The old man stepped off on the side of the trap nearest to the cliff, and, failing to secure a footing on the narrow Jedge, lost his balance and was hurled down to the shore 100 ft. below the top of the cliff. The tide was in at the time, and great difficulty was experienced in effecting a rescue. It was thought, moreover, that Mr. Roberts must be dead. Great was the surprise of the other ; men, however, when they got round the Bluff and found him alive, and lying groaning on the sand with nothing worse than several broken ribs and severe scalp wounds. He is now progressing favorably.
