RIFLE SHOOTING.
TARANAKI CHALLENGE SHIELD. On Saturday, at Whareroa, the Kaponga Rifle Club met the Hawera Rifle Club for the Taranaki Challenge Shield. Rifleman Roots and Cross, of the Hawera Club, were top for the day with a score of 94 each, the highest scores in the Kaponga team being registered by Riflemen G. Smith and A. Zimmerman, with 91 each. The conditions of the match were eight men aside, seven shots and an optional sighter at each range, 300 yards, 500 yards, and 600 yards. Scores:— HAWERA.
The Taranaki Challenge Shield was wrested from the Kaponga Rifle Club on October 29 last. Since that date the Hawera Club has successfully withstood chauenges from tte Patea Rifle Club, who were defeated by 43 points; New Plymouth Rifle Club, who were defeated by the narrow margin of one point, and on Saturday last by the Kaponga dub, who were defeated by 16 points. The New Plymouth dub, inspired by the good fight they had put up last time, - intend to go down again on Saturday week.—Star.
