■' NEW ZEALAND AND N.S.W. RESULT OF LADIES’ MATCHES. By Teleeraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright. Received April 21, 10.35 pxh. Sydney, April 21. The first rounds of the annual tennis tournament opened at Double Bay •in fine weather with the New Zealand ladies pitted against New South Wales ladies in singles and doubles. The courts were in good condition. There was a small attendance. The New Zealand ladies were victorious in one singles and one doubles, ifiss Curtis (N.Z.) beat Miss St. George (N.S.W.) 6— 2, 6 —3, displaying fine forehand driving and also volleying well. Mrs. Lascelles (N.S.W.) beat Miss MacFarlane (N.Z.) 6—o, 6-—42. Miss MacFarlane excelled in back-line play. Miss Gray (N.S.W.) beat Miss Payton (N.Z.) 6—2, G—6. Miss I’ayton was not equal to the inter-State standard. Miss Lloyd (N.S.W.) beat Miss Wellwood (N.Z.) 6—4, '6—2. The latter was weak in returns. In the doubles Miss St. George and Mrs. Lascelles (N.S.W.) beat Miss Curtis and Miss Wellwood (NJZ.) 6—l, 6 —2. The New South Wales combination was too strong, though Miss Curtis was displaying form of a high standard. Miss MacFarlane and Miss Pay ton (N.Z.) beat Miss Lloyd and. Miss Gray (N.S.W.) 5—7. G—3, 6—l, after a keen contest. Miss MacFarlane played an outstanding game, but Miss Payton was somewhat feeble. On the day’s play Miss Curtis stood out from her colleagues and opponents and greatly impressed the critics. The quartette will be engaged against New South Wales again on Saturday i® four singles and two doubles, and th< series will be continued on Tuesday and Wednesday.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
