SEA EROSION.

POSITION AT EAST END. PROTECTION AGAIN URGED. The problem qf sea erosion at thg East End beach was again before the New Plymouth Borough Council last night. On behalf of the East End Reserve Committee, Mr. J. Rawlinson (deputychairman), wrote directing the attention of the council to the fact that the sea had started to make a further encroachment on the portion of the foreshore in front of the pavilion where the bathers descended to the beach? The hope was expressed that the council would do something to remedy the dangerous position of the reserve at this point. The engineer (Mr. W. H. Cook) reported under date April 10: “A careful examination this morning shows no sign of further erosion; on the contrary, boulders have been washed up to a depth of approximately 3 feet against the breastwork and for about 21 feet out seaward for from 6 to 7 chains.” He pointed out, however, that no one could forsee what might happen during the winter months. The piles used for protection were shielding the toe of the bank and would be thoroughly wired in anticipation oi storms.

A deputation from the committee, consisting of Messrs. A. R. Davis (chairman) and R. Hill (secretary), also waited on the council. Mr. Davis stated that the committee were prepared to expend their own money in continuing the boulder protection work started by the engineer. They desFred the council to give a couple of men and a horse team for a week. In reply to Or. Rumball, who asked whether any further damage had been caused, the Mayor said that last week, when there were abnormal tides, the sea had washed up to tht bank. The council decided to grant the committee’s request, the arrangements to be made with the engineer.
