BOROUGH AFFAIRS.
NEW PLYMOUTH COUNCIL. FOOTPATH REQUIREMENTS. The New Plymouth Borough Council met last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr. F. E. Wilson), Crs. J. Kibby, V. Griffiths, T. N. Blackball, W. Rumball. E. Dingle, R. L. Parkin, J. Brown, and R. A. Seven ratepayers of Harbor Road. Moturoa, requested the council to form and make a footpath along the street before the winter and wet weather set in.—The engineer reported that the approximate cost of reforming and gravelling the path and road was £5O. The residents are to be informed that the council could not authorise the work at present. A letter from G. M. Guthrie, Fitzroy. directed attention to the bll Mate of the footpaths in Newton Street.—A committee of four was set. up to inspect paths in this locality at Fitzroy. •Mr. E. Doile, Gilbert Street West wrote asking th£ council to authorise certain work to prevent the water coming on to his land. —The engineer stated that the pipes were of ample size to cope with any but abnormal rainstorms. The rainfall on the occasion mentioned was more in the nature of a cloud-burst. A copy of the engineer’s report is to be sent tc Mrs. Doile.
A request that Selwyn Street b< formed and footpaths made the fut width was received from Mr. C. W. Ruebe, Vogeltown. —The engineer esti mated the cost at £25. The council decided that an inspection of the locality be made. THE SEPTIC TANK. The branch secretary of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants wrote stating that the council’s reply in regard to the improvement of the outlet from the septic tank was placed before a recent meeting of the society. He was instructed to advise that the council’s reply was considered unsatisfactory. “Aa the present state of the stream is offensive,” the letter continued, “and a§ it is an undoubted danger to the health of those working in the vicinity, we desire the council to make provision at its earliest possible convenience to have the effluent pipe extended out to sea ti} at least low-water mark.”—The letter was received. WAIWAKAIHO WEIR The engineer reported that in company with the Public Works engineer, and the Taranaki County engineer he had made an inspection of tHe weir at the Waiwakaiho bridge. The conclusions they had come to were that no damage had been caused to the weir by floods; that no subsidence of the blocks had taken place; and that it was necessary for the bustion work to be repaired and strengthened. Beyond this there seemed to be little danger of damage occurring. GENERAL. A letter was received from} Mrs. M. J. Butler, of Toko, asking the council to reconsider the rental charged for the property leased by her husband.—-Con-sideration was deferred. The engineer reported that the cost of lowering a portion of Fitzroy Road, forming and draining, would be £146. —Deferred till the next meeting, and an inspection of the road will be made by, a sub-committee. A sketch plan of proposed residential flats to be erected -in St. Aubyn Street for'Mr. A. B. Waldie was forwarded by Messrs. Messenger, Griffitlw and Taylor, architects, who requested permisaion to proceed with the erection without full compliance with the by-laws respecting the width of stairway. In view of the circumstances and also considering the fact that ample fire escapes were provided, the inspector was of opinion that the request could be granted.—lt waa decided to approach Mr. Waldie with a view to having the building set back from the street line before granting the permit.
