QUARRY FATALITY.

DEATH OF MARRIED MAN. INJURED AT PARITUTU. An accident which had fatal consequences occurred at the New Plymouth Harbor Board’s quarry at Paritutu late on Thursday night. An employee named James Watson was run over by a truck, his right leg being badly crushed, and he died in the New Plymouth Hospital yesterday morning. Watson was about thirty years of age, and is survived by a widow and two children. He was a native of Victoria, and took part in the Great War. The accident occurred during the night shift, on which Watson was engaged as a horse-driver in connection with the haulage of trucks of stone and debris from the quarry to the tiphead. As far as can ba ascertained, the mishap occurred about 11.20 on Thursday night. Apparently Watson was leading a horse attached to a loaded truck when his boot caught in the rail points, causing him to fall, and the truck passed over him. Dr. Wade was communicated with, and after attending to the injured man ordered his removal to the hospital. Amputation of the limb was found necessary, but the injuries received were so serious that Watson succumbed during the morning. At yesterday’s meeting of the Harbot Board the chairman (Mr. Newton King) said he regretted to state that a serious accident had taken place at the quarries. Apparently it was due to no fault at the quarry, because the accident occurred at a spot at which there was a bright light. He understood that the inspector of quarries had visited the locality that morning, and that the accident was entirely unavoidable. When it was learned that Watson had succumbed to his injuries the board adjourned the business for a brief period as a mark of respect to the late employee, and it was decided to forward an expression of condolence to the deceased’s family.
