TARANAKI TOURNAMENT YESTERDAY'S PLAY, CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL TO-DAY, The annual Taranaki gold championship tournament was continued at the New Plymoutn links at Waiwakaiho yesterday. The weather was dull for the greater part of the day, but there was no wind, and the conditions were ideal for players. In the morning the second round of the championship was played, while the third round was decided in the afternoon. As a result F. S. Johns (New Plymouth), J. Harold (Wanganui), G. N. Pharazyn (Wellington) and T. Y’. Mackay are left in the semi-finals to be played this morning. A surprise of the championship was the defeat of A. E. Ekstedt (Palmerston North) in the second round by the New Plymouth player, W. H. Robertshaw. On Saturday Ekstedt topped the list of the sixteen to qualify, with a score for the 36 holes of 162. All the championship matches, with two exceptions, were very keenly contested, two of the games going to the 19th hole before a decision was arrived at. The winner of the bogey handicap turned -.up in G. M. Chong (New Plymouth). A. medal match was also played, resulting in W. J. Hutchings (New Plymouth) winning with a card of 94—18—76. Continuous | putting competitions were held, the best cards being: Men, L. Quin (Eltham), 15; ladies, Mrs. M. Gray (New Plymouth), 17.

The tournament will conclude to-day. Principal interest will centre on the championship, the semi-finals being played in the morning and the final after lunch. The semi-finals will commence at 8.30 a.m., and the finalists •will go out at noon. The four-ball match will follow the championship In the morning, and the rule ol play will be: Players, after arranging their own partners and opponents, should apply to the starter for cards, and will be sent off in the order of application. After the finalists in the championship get away ta noon the players in the bogey match will follow. The order of play in this match will be arranged in the same way as in the four-ball match, players being permitted to choose their own opponents. The presentation of trophies will take place at the conclusion of play this afternoon. Details of yesterday’s play are: THE CHAMPIONSHIP. Second Round. N. J. Stitchbury (Palmerston North) beat W. B. Harold (Wanganui) beat D. H. Butcher (New Plymouth), 7 up and 6. W. H. Robertshaw (New Plymouth) beat A. E. Ekstedt (Palmerston North), 1 up. G. N. Pharazyn (Wellington) beat G. Gudgeon (Inglewood), 1 up. Dr. Wright (Napier) beat Dr. Seifert (Palmerston North), 1 up at the 19th hole. T. Y r . Mackay (New Plymouth) beat P. Wright (Stratford), 3 up and 2. Third Round. Johns beat Stitchbury, 2 up and 1. Harold beat A. Seifert, 3 up and 2. Pharazyn beat Robertshaw, 2 up and 1. Mackay beat Dr. Wright, 3 ,up and 2. Semi-finals. The matches in the semi-finals to be played this morning are; Johns v. Harold. Pharazyn v. Mackay. BOGEY HANDICAP. The bogey handicap played in the morning was won by G. M. Chong (New Plymouth). The best scores are: G. M. Chong (New Plymouth), handicap 1, 3 up. D. H. McKay (Wanganui), handicap 9,2 up. T. A. Moodie (Palmerston North), handicap D. Smyth (New Plymouth), handicap 15, all square. J. Quin (Eltham), handicap 4, all square. MEDAL MATCH. The medal match was won by W. J. Hutchings (New Plymouth), with 94—18 —76. The best scores are: W. J. Hutchings (New Plymouth), 94—18 76. W.
