WAIMATE PLAINS TROTS. SUCCESSFUL ANNUAL MEETING. GOLDMAN WINS THE CUP. The eighth annual totalisator meeting of the Waimate Plains Trotting Club was held on the Egmont Racing Club’s course at Hawera yesterday. The weather in the early part of the day was showery, but later on it set in fine, though duiL There was a large attendance of the public, who thoroughly enjoyed the sport provided, the fields in all thg handicap events being large, and the finishes in the majority of cases close. Mr. A. Morse had the course in splendid order, so that, despite the rain of the early morning, the going was good. The principal event, the Waimate Plains Cup, drew* a fine field of fourteen, and was won by the Auckland-owned Goldman, who paid over two figures. A feature of the meeting was the way in which the winners were concealed, the public only being able to sort out the winner cor- , rectly on three occasions. The classic event, the Taranaki Futurity Stakes, only drew a field of three, and was won by the Southern owned Ratana. The conduct of the meeting was distinctly good, the events being got off well to time. Mr. A. Morse handled his fields well as starter, whilst Mr. J. Gray, i a< judge, hoisted the numbers promptly and correctly. The totalisator, controlled I by Mr. J. O'Callaghan, handled £10,922, as compared with £22.923 last year, a decrease of £6OOl, but as the gate receipts showed a substantial increase, there should be no loss over the meeting. / Mr. A. G. Mabie, the stipendiary steward, was present, but there was only one enquiry during the day. J. Beal, who was to have ridden Queen Chimes in the Normanby Handicap, was suspended till the end of the season for misconduct, which necessitated Mr. Corrigan withdrawing tne horse from the race.
The afternoon tea- arrangements were ablv controlled for the club by Mr. L. O. Hooker and Mrs. Duggan, whilst the Hawera Citizens’ Band, under Conductor E. H. Gould., provided an enjoyable programme of music. The secretarial duties were in the hands of Mr. V . B. Stratton and a capable staff, and this department was capably managed. RACING IN AUSTRALIA. SECOND DAY’ AT SYDNEY. SURPRISE VICTORY IN CUP. By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright. Received April 17, 8.40 p.m. Sydney, April 17. The second day of the Australian Jockey Club’s autumn meeting was held to-day. The weather was fine and warm, and the course in excellent condition. The attendance was 80,000. The programme proved Intensely interesting, possibly due to the extra elusiveness on itie part of most of the winners. Prince Charles’ Cup victory surprised the spectators, who failed to give the winner the customary cheer when returning to scale. Stern countenances to-day formed a marked contrast to Saturday's jubilant note, indicating clearly the turn of Fortune’s wheel against the spectators. New Zealand’s lonely representative, Soifanello, was a non-starter In. the Flying. Details of the racing are: FLYING HANDICAP; 1000 sovs; six furlongs.—Dunwil, 8.10, 1; Lisnavane, 8.8, 2; Etive, 8.6, 3. Eighteen starters. From an excellent start, Julia Grey was first out, and led into the straight, being joined by Nautical when leaving the straight. Royal Aiwyne went to the front at nine furlongs, and maintained this position till the half-mile, where Sister Olive moved to file front, looking dangerous down the straight. Kashmir then came through on the outside, and seemed assured of victory at the furlong post, but Prince Charles, with a late run on the rails, snatched victory in the last few yards and won by three-quarters of a length, with half a length between second and third. OUTSTANDING SUPERIORITY. Received April 17, 5.5 p.m. Sydney, April 17. The Herald says Beauford had the race won from the word go, and led with an easy stride that suggested he could continue the same pace another couple of miles or so. It was difihnjlt to believe that Eurythmie was showing true form. Beauford has clearly shown that there is no horse in Australia that can extend him, at al! events up to a mile and a half. The TGlegrapt says It was not a r»O9, but
a procession, and describes Beauford as a phenomenal galloper. If he had been pressed there was no saying what he coura nave done. All that can be said about Eurythmic is that he is not the Eurythmic which won the Sydney Cup a year ago.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable The New Plymouth-owned Leithflekl is reported to have won a race on the West Coast yesterday. Particulars of the meeting were not telegraphed. While being taken from Hawera to the Hawera racecourse yesterday the trotting horse Little Pointer was run into by a motor car and had its leg broken, necessitating it being destroyed. Little Pointer was a five-year-old brown gelding by Logan Pointer-—Little Doris, and was owned by Mr. D. Withers.
