HUATOKI DOMAIN.

PICNIC AND SPORTS. A pleasant day’s outing was provided by the pitnic and sports held at the Huatoki Domain on Saturday, and organised by the recently appointed Domain Board. This charming little valley spot, on the Huatoki stream,, mid-way between Vogeltown and Frankleigh Park, makes an idea! picnicking ground, and will undoubtedly become a valuable asset to these suburbs when certain contemplated Improvements are effected. Already much of the furze has been cleared, leaving an open space for the successful conduct of such a gathering as that held on Saturday. A working bee, organised about a fortnight ago, erected a neat little bridge over the stream near by, allowing easier access for children from the Frankleigh district who attend the' Vogeltown school. The proceeds of the function (about £4O) will go towards fencing off the domain. Near the domain is an area of native bush, which has been set apart as a scenic reserve; this, when properly opened up, will add another spot of rare charin to those with which New Plymouth has been endowed. The wooded glen forming the domain was a scene of activity on Saturday. Stalls of various kinds, a cocoanut shy, fishing pond, together with several competitions, helped to swell the funds of what can only be regarded as a very creditable effort. Afternoon tea was procurable on the grounds. Children’s races were held at intervals throughout the day, whilst the results of the other races were:— Bowlers’ Race, 100yds: V. Griffiths 1, A. T. Moore 2. 75 Yards: Sinclair 1, D. Ballantyne 2. Young Ladies’ Race: Miss O. Noble 1, Miss I. Freethey 2. * Stepping the chain was won by Mr. H. Gilford, who was only half an Inch out. Live weight of sheep (1551b5) : Mr. W. Healv (154%1b5). Number of beans in bottle (985) : Mr. Cayford, Bell Block (976). The members of the board who organised the gathering were headed by Mr. H. Rumball ((chairman) and Mr. A. E. Laurence (secretary), and they, together with the ladles, who rendered invaluable assistance, are to be congratulated on the results with which their efforts were attended. In the evening a euchre party was held at Frankleigh Park.
