BENEFIT MATCH. TUKAPA 12 v. STAR 5. Good patronage was accorded the match between Tukapa and Star which was played at Westown Park on Saturday on behalf of a footballer's benefit fund. For the first of the season the contest was of an interesting character. At half-time Tukapa led 3—o, and by the end of the game had increased this to 12, while Star scored 5 points. For the winners tries were scored by Hart, Stohr, Ennis and Oliver. Star’s score was a try secured by Pollock and converted by Sturmey. Mr. W. Roeh refereed. HAWERA (24) V. IMLAY (Nil). Hawera proved much too good for the Imlay (Wanganui) teain, whom they defeated by 21 points to nil, after a fast and oj)en game. The match, which was played on the Hawera showgrounds, attracted an attendance of about 500. The weather conditions were good for football, a cold wind giving a reminder of winter. The turf was in splendid condition. Hawera were represented by their full Strength, taking the field as follows: Hughes, Whittington, Robertson, Wilkinson, Walshe, Purcell, Atkins, Osborne, Sutherland,, Robinson, West, Hunt, A. Murphy, Fogarty, and O. Murphy.
Imlay were rather on the weak side, only In-inglug thirteen men, Chadwick and Baldwin filling the vacancies. The team took the field as follows: C. Head, Black, Palmer, Waite, Hartnell, Brown, Benson, Chadwick, Smith, Phillips, Cox, J. Phillips, Paterson, Baldwin, G. Ross. Right from the start Robertson kicked, and the ball rebounded, putting Imlay in a great attacking position, where, from an infringement, Brown failed to goal in an easy position. Hawera livened up and attacked, Atkins setting his backs moving, and. well aided by Purcell and Robertson, Whittington, and then Wilkinson essayed to score, but the ball reached the dead ball Line. Chadwick and Cox headed rushes to mid-field, where, from a scrum, Atkins badly fooled the opposition and passed to Purcell, who cut in cleverly and shot the ball to West, who scored, and Hughes goaled.. Hawera kept up the pressure, and Wilkinson, .picking up smartly, .side-stepped a couple of opponents, and after a great run scored. West falling to convert. Good concerted moves by the Hawera backs saw Whittington throw out in the Corner, but, immediately using the other wing, Wilkinson beat several men cleverly and scored, Hughes again goaling. Hawera had all the better of the balance of the spell, WhittinE’fc’m just failing to eross, whilst also missed -a chance to goal from a free kick. The spell ended: Hawera 13 Imlay nil. The second spell opened with Imlay attacking. Smith passed to Cox, who was upended by Wilkinson. Hunt led the Hawera pack to a gobd position, and then, .from the line-out, the ball went from West via all the backs to Wilkinson, who ended a pretty effort by sidestepping Waite and scoring. Hughes failed to goal. Imlay now took a turn at attack, and Palmer had a shot, which failed. Then O. Murphy headed a great Hawera rush, but kicked too hard and reached the dead ball line. Next, Wilkinson kicked high, and Brown, whd failed to take the ball, endeavored to throw It out, but Wilkinson gathered up and dived across. Hughes failed to goal. Hawera kept up the pressure, and Chadwick being smothered with the ball. Hunt was able to force his way across, and Osborne goaled. Imlav got moving, but Hawera soon pressed at,..in, and some nice work by Atkins, Purcell, Robertson and Whittington saw the latter nearly over on two occasions. Then Wilkinson, who was playing up to his best form, beat four men, swerving at top speed, and scored, but was called back for an infringement, and the game ended soon after with the score:— Hawera 24 Imlay nil Mr. F.
