ATHLETICS.
PATEA SPORTS. A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. WILSON WINS CHAMPIONSHIP. The annual athletic meeting under the auspices of the Patea Sports Club was held on the Patea Domain on Saturday, In perfect weather. There was a large gathering on the picturesque grounds, and excellent sport was provided, the varied programme of events drawing keen competition. Proceedings were enlivened throughout the day by the Patea Brass Band and the Eltham Pipe Band,, while excellent refreshments were dispensed in a large marquee on tiie grounds. Highland dancing was carried on during the afternoon to the piping of members of the Eltham Band, and each competitor received hearty applause. The conduct of the meeting was admirable, and all arrangements had been made to cater for the entertainment and comfort of the public. The Taranaki 120 yards Championship Cup was won for the second time by B. Wilson, of Douglas, the cup now going into tfce winner’s possession. The cup was presented to Mr. Wilson at the finish of the race by Mr. A. T. Christensen, the recipient being given three hearty cheers. The committee responsible for the conduct of the meeting was as follows: —-Messrs. J. H. Cronin (President), A. T. Christensen (Patron), T. Campbell (handicapper), A. Pearce (starter), A. N. Williams (treasurer), J. Paterson and J. Dwyer (timekeepers), D. Palmer (secretary). Captain Tinney's "Siamese Twins” (the tiny Gordon twin brothers) caused high amusements by their boxing and wrestling. There was a fairly good attendance at the gala day held on the Domain at Okato on Saturday. The object of the gathering was to raise funds to reduce the balance of the debt incurred in carrying out portion of the Improvements to the grounds, and the day’s takings should substantially assist in reducing this debit, which amounts to £5O. A committee, with Mr. J. S. Wooldridge as chairman and Mr. C. Larsen as secretary, conducted the arrangements. Athletic events and various competitions were conducted during the afternoon, the results of the principal events being : 220 Yards Handicap.—J. Ashley 1, P. Smith 2.
