THE TEAMS’ MATCH. Eight teams competed in the teams’ match, which was won by Palmerston North No. 1. The best scores were:— Palmerston North No. 1 (Ekstedt, Sim, A. Seifert, and W. TARANAKI TOURNAMENT, FIRST DAY'S PLAY. THE DRAW FOR TO-DAY. The annual Taranaki championship meeting opened on the New Plymouth Club's links at Waiwakaiho on Saturday. The links were in splendid order and fine weather was only broken by a few showers in the afternoon. The number of competitors was a record, 73 men playing. Play on Saturday was confined to the qualifying round of the championship over 36 holes, one round being played in the morning and the other in the afternoon. In conjunction with this, medal matches were played, trophies being given for the best nett score in each medal round. A trophy was also awarded for the best total gross score of the two rounds, while the day’s score also counted in the teams' match. The sixteen to qualify for the championship were headed by E. A. Ekstedt (Palmerston North), who returned an excellent card of 163, while the highest score to qualify was 181. The morning medal match was won by T. V. Mackay (New Plymouth) with 81—5 —76, and the afternoon medal match went to J. E. Winter (Stratford) with 87— 12—75. The trophy for the best gross score for the two rounds of 36 holes was won by E. A. Ekstedt (Palmerston North) with 79, 84, a total of 163. Palmerston North No. 1 team won the teams’ match. The best putting card returned during the day was 15, by W. B. Glasgow (Waitara). This morning the second round of the championship will be played, and for those not engaged in the championship there will be a bogey handicap. In the afternoon the third round of the championship will be decided, with a* medal match for otters. Details of Saturday’s play are:— THE CHAMPIONSHIP. To-<morrow the semi-finals of the championship will start at 8.30 a.m., followed immediately by the four-ball match. Players, after arranging their own partners and opponents, should apply to the starter for cards, and will be sent off in the order ot application. The championship final will start at noon, followed by the players in the bogey match. The order of play in this match will be arranged in the same way as in the four-ball match, players being permitted to I choose their own opponents.
