ENGINEERING LOCK-OUT.
_ NEGOTIATIONS CLOSED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, April 14. _ The conference between the engineering trades and employers broke down at five o’clock this morning, the delegates separating. Following on the breakdown of the negotiations to-day, after a prolonged conference, the engineering employers announce that the following proposals were submitted to the unions: (1) The unions shall become partners in a scheme for avoiding strikes, and agree that there will be no stoppage of work during the negotiations. (2) In case of material alteration of working conditions the management shall, as far as possible, give the workers, directly or by their representative tn the shop, ten days’ notice in which the workers shall have an opportunity of discussion with the management. The unions replied that the masters must give the trade unions’ officials ten days’ notice before proposing an alteration, in addition to giving the employers ten days. The masters replied that it was evident the trade unions were not prepared to allow the managements to exercise material functions, and closed the negotiations. Received April 16, 5.5 p.m. London, April 15. The engineering negotiations lasted for eighteen hours and only ended at dawn on Good Friday.
