YOUTHFUL BURGLAR.

“PENNY DREADFUL” LOVER. “I found over 100 Nelson Lee detective stories in this boy’s possession,” said the probation officer at the Christchurch Magistrate’s Court ou Saturday concerning a lad of 15 years, who was charged with stealing two pairs of ladies' boots valued at £2 10s. The accused climbed through the window of a house in Gloucester Street during the absence of the occupants and abstracted the boots. The probation officer explained that the lad was evidently well steeped in detective lore of the “penny dreadful” type. He had actually kept an index of the characters in the Nelson Lee tales. The boy was employed by the post and telegraph office. His family was a respectable one. The case was adjourned for a year.
