OKATO FUNCTION.

PLAIN. .AND FANCY DRBSS BALL. A most successful and thoroughly enjoyable plain and fancy dress bali, organised by the spinsters and bachelors of the Okato district, was held in the Hempton Hall last Friday evening. The hall had been beautifully decorated, nikau palms, ferns and colored papers having effected a great transformation, and providing a suitable setting for the many beautiful dresses, both evening and fancy. About 100 couples were present between 40 and 50 couples being in fancy dress—and the scene was an exceedingly picturesque one. Messrs. H. Roberts and B. Smith, as M.’sC., kept matters merrily moving to excellent music provided by Messrs. Pearson (piano) and Morris (violin), extras being played by Misses Pearson, Corbett, Sole, and Mr. Payne. The supper was a feature. The function was the most successful that has been held in Okato for some time past. All the fancy costumes were well designed, rendering the task of the judges a most difficult one. The priaes were ultimately awarded as follows:—Ladies’ best fancy costume, Mrs. J. Shaw, Powder and l?atches; ladies’ most original dress, Miss C. Patterson, Indian Chief; men’s best fancy costume, Mr. Jenkins, Alladin; men’s most original costume, Mr. Brennan, Mexican Cowboy. Some of those specially admired were Mrs. L. Carey, Snow Q;ueen; Miss O. Street, Jockey; Mrs. W. J. Bridgeman, Christmas Tree; Mr. L. Haylock. College Student; Mr. C. Michelson, Chinaman; Mr. Honeyfield, Gala Day; Mt. A. Roebuck, Old Dad Wayback.
