CAPE EGMONT SPORTS.

A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. The annual sports held under the auspices •of the Cape Egm on.t Sports Club took place at Pungarehu yesterday, and proved very successful. The weather, though threatening during the morning, remained fine, save for one slight shower, consequently there was a good attendance of the public. As the Recreation Grounds are at present under crop, in connection with the improvement scheme now in hand, the meeting was held in a paddock, placed at the club's disposal, by Wi Kupe. This proved eminently adapted for the purpose, a bill serving as a natural grandstand, front which the (fliops could be viewed. The programme submitted comprised athletic and chopping events and a football tournament. In both the chopping and running the fields were good and tlie finishes very close, blows only separating the placed men in the former, and inches in the latter, showing that the handicapper, Mr. P. Holmes, of Opunake, had correctly gauged the competitors. In fact his work made the task of judge no sinecure, but Messrs. F. C. Smith and H. Symons (made no mistakes. Mr. P. Brophy, as starter, got his fields away well. The football tournament attracted four entries, all local district teams with the exception of Opunake, who were strongly represented, »nd proved unbeatable.

The catering was in the hands of a strong ladies’ committee, headed by Mrs. Matthews, and they did great work, though under difficulties, the marquee being blown down just as they were about to get going. A strong committee, with Mr. W. T. Guild as chainman, controlled the gathering, and must be complimented &n the success achieved, whilst a special word of praise is due to the indefatigable secretaries, Messrs. Sullivan and Hickey.
