TARANAKI V. AUCKLAND. BAIN STOPS PLAY, By Telegraph.—Press Association, Auckland, Last Night. The match between Taranaki and Auckland was played at the Parnell courts on Saturday. It commenced at 11 a.m., under fine conditions, with a good light and no wind. Rain, however, set in about 4 p.m., when play was abandoned, Auckland having won eleven matches and Taranaki four. MEN’S SINGLES. The outstanding game was between Wallace and Robson, won by the latter after a very close struggle. t In the first set the players won their service up to the 11th game, when Wallace took Robson's service, the latter then making it 6 all from the visitor's service. They each won their own services until the score was B—7, and in the sixteenth game Robson took the set, after deuce had been called. In the second set the score ran to 6 all, Wallace taking the thirteenth after a close struggle, and the fourteenth from 40—15. The third and deciding set was taken to five all, although Wallace led at 5—3. 'Serving in the eleventh game, Robson lost the first point, equalised with the second, and carried the score to 40—‘15, when Wallace added another point to his score, but Robson took the next and the game. Robson made a love game of the last. Following his second service, Wallace played a beautiful cross-court drive, which beat Robson, but when the umpire declared it out some doubt was expressed by the spectators. This was a critical period in the game. Robson took the next point, and finished with a low cut across the net, which Wallace failed to pick up. Wallace experienced little difficulty with Robson's fast service, but was plainly in trouble when the Aucklander sent down his swerve service. Seeing this, Robson imparted the chop to the majority of his deliveries. Throughout the visitor played a steady and accurate game, passing Robson repeatedly, and winning many points with his low, fast drive. Base-line play charactei’ised the first set between Brinsden and Dickie. The latter won the first game off Brinden’s service, but the Aucklander took the next four, Dickie winning the sixth and Brinsden the seventh. Dickie carried his score to three on the next game, and pressed Brinsden hard on the ninth, which was won by Brinsden after an exciting rally. Dickie ran right away with four games in the second set, conceding only three points to his opponent. By a brilliant recovery. Brinsden now wok six games and the match, Dickie's determined ptfay, however, producing some close finishes. MEN’S DOUBLES. In the men's doubles Nicholson and Webster started badly, losing three games, but, rallying, brought the score to four all, and finished with an advantage of 7—5. The second set went to Griffiths and Brinsden, but the visitors took the third with a substantial margin. Nicholson’s overhead work was good, while his partners play was sound throughLADIES’ SINGLES.
