A PROFESSORIAL APPOINTMENT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunedin, Last Night. It should be explained that the reason for the University Council rescinding the previous resolution appointing Dr. Peter MacCallum to the position of professor of bacteriology, was that Dr. MacCallum did not possess the qualifications as specified in the newspaper advertisement inviting applications for the position. ODDFELLOWS’ CONFERENCE. Christchurch, Apri 6. The Oddfellows’ Conference passed a resolution that a deputation comprising representatives of all Friendly Societies interview the Premier with a view to having the Mutual Provident Act amended in the direction of allowing an exemption of £5O for each child as a member of a Friendly Society when assessing the parent’s income, similar to the income-tax exemption already in force, also to .withdrawal from participation in the Government's after discharge sickness scheme, pertaining to soldier members, and to repeal the resolution of the fotmer conference authorising the keeping of an after discharge sickness fund account. ORDER OF RECHABITES. Wellington, April 5. The first session of the jubilee council meeting of the Independent Order of Rechabites opened yesterday. Representatives from 47 tents were present. The membership for the New Zealand district is now 3333, an increase of 384 since last council meeting. The Mayor will tender the overseas delegates a civic reception to-day.
