DOMINION NEWS.

TIME BY WIRELESS. By Telegraph.—Press Association Wellington, April 4. Since March 18 Wellington has been receiving exact Greenwich time by wireless daily. It is received from Bordeaux by Dr. Adams. Government astronomer, who is provided with a receiving set and listens in at 7.30 a.m. each day. The true time is then wired out from Wellington, and has been found very useful by shipping people. On one occasion a vessel that had been blown off the coast in dirty weather was able to save 100 tons of coal by setting a correct course.

SHIP OFFICERS’ CONDITIONS. Wellington, April 4. The members of the Merchant Service Guild have taken a ballot on the question of accepting the offer by the Union Company of modified working conditions. The company agreed to continue the current rate of wages to officers until the Arbitra tion Court made a pronouncement on the wages question, provided the officers agreed to certain changes in hours and working conditions. The result of the ballot has been a refusal to accept the company’s offer, on the ground that it will mean a reversion to the 56-hour week and break the principle of an eight-hour day.

CHARGE OF MANSLAUGHTER. Dunedin, April 4. Arising out of the death of a boy, through being knocked down by a gig at Kensington corner on March 16, Thomas Day has been committed for trial for manslaughter.
