Mr. Hughes has expressed opposition to the request made in the House of Commons that Australians should garrison Gallipoli. He did not want to foster a spirit of militarism and declared that the spirit of Australia was against sending troops outside the Commonwealth.
[ln the House of Commons, Major Ormesby-Gore suggested that the Australian Government should be asked to provide a quota of troops for the Allied garrison at Gallipoli under the revised Turkish Treaty. Mr. 'Chamberlain replied that the Government fully realised Australasia’s special interest, but it was premature to consider it until the treaty had been signed.]
