ELTHAM.
QUEEN CARNIVAL. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The carnival queen election which has been running here for the past few weeks in aid of the funds of the Eltham Brass Band and the Pipe Band, came to a conclusion on Saturday night, and proved a far greater success than was anticipated by even the most optimistic member of the carnival committee. There were four candidates, but it was generally expected that the issue would lie between the Juvenile and Loyal candidates, whose committees had been working very hard, and so it proved. As the progress payments came in the position of the .various candidates fluctuated, as indicated by the flags flown on the Coronation Hotel flag-pole. On Saturday, prior to the final burst, the positions were: Miss W. Henrickson (Motor), £76 Us, 9186 votes; Miss C. White (Mountain), £72 14s sd, 8728 votes; Miss O. Marchant (Juvenile), £7O Ils, 8466 votes; Miss D. Taylor (Loyal), £4l Is, 4926 votes. This amounted to £260 17s 4d, the votes totalling 31,306. On Saturday evening the scene around Tristram and Co.’s office, which was used as the headquarters, was a very exciting one. It was known that large sums of money had been received, and when the final result was announced it was found that the sum of £4BO 14s 7d had been received that evening, the bulk of the money being for the Juvenile and Loyal candidates, the final figures being: Miss O. Marchant (Juvenile) : 34,688 votes; £289 Is 5Ad. ’ Miss D. Taylor (Loyal): 32,065 votes; £267 4s Miss C. White (Mountain) : 12,231 votes; £lOl 18s 6d. Miss W. Henrickson (Motor): 10,002 votes; £B3 7s. The total was: 88,986 votes; £741 Us 3d. The result is distinctly creditable to the various candidates’ committees, and also to the main executive, of which Mr. Heyes was chairman and Mr. T. King secretary. The committee will meet early to arrange for the crowning ceremony. Residents of Eltham and district—and, indeed, in any part of Taranaki—requiring new furniture would do well to call on or write to O. Manby, furniture warehouse, Eltham. For the next month Mr. Manby is holding a clearing sale, as he is overstocked in practically every line. There are big reductions, and, indeed, no more favorable opportunity of furnishing economically has been placed before the public of Taranaki since pre-war days.
