A letter from the Waitara Chamber of Commerce, making the following suggestions, was read at the quarterly meeting of the Hawera Chamber of Commerce: (1) That the Hawera Chamber request the local bodies in its district to pass strong resolutions for, submission to the Minister for Public Works, urging the great necessity for the early completion of the Stratford—Okahukura Railway. (2) That the New Plymouth, Stratford and Waitara Chambers make an effort to send a joint delegation to Wellington to interview the Minister on the matter. The president (Mr. J. B. Murdoch) said that the line was the most important in New Zealand at the present time. Coal, which now came from Huntly, travelled 133 miles further than would be necessary if this line was completed. They knew it was not a time for expenditure, but he understood that the Government was prepared to undertake certain public works for the purpose of giving employment, and this railway would give employment for many hundreds. The letter was received. THE £lOOO DRIVE. The Stratford retailers’ £lOOO drive in aid of the Technical High School grounds continues to draw very satisfactory results. Already over half the sum aimed at is actually in hand, while the various selling businesses have large and varying sums not yet handed in to the committee. . It has been decided to corctinye selling tickets until Thursday night, and the prizes will be distributed on Saturday. A further number of special prizes have now come to hand from business firms, and it is stated that the proportion of special prizes to the ordinary prizes will now be considerably greater, and brisk business is'"expected until the closing night. The task of distributing 20,000 prizes will be no light one, and it is proposed to hand out the “specials” from the old Union Bank building, and to utilise motor lorries for distributing the ordinary surprise packets.
