OPIUM SMOKING. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, March 27. In the Magistrate’s Court a Chinaman named Ah Lye was fined £lO for smoking opium, and £25 for being in possession of the drug. W.C.T.U. CONVENTION. Hamilton, March 27. At the W.C.T.U. convention a memorial service was held for Countess Carlisle, Lady Henry Somerset, and Mrs. A. R. Atkinson. The convention decided to recommend every union to try to secure the election to school committees and education boards of candidates favorable to the Nelson system of Bible teaching in schools. FINED FOR BETTING. Auckland, March 27. At the Police Court to-day, Charles Philpott, charged with betting tote odds, was fined £6O on three offences. Sidney Clyde Hanton was committed for trial on a charge of bookmaking. In the case of Philpott, the police found on him a book of credit and debt slips, showing a credit of £685. BURGLARS CAPTURED. Auckland, March 27. Two men were caught in the act of burglary at Nook Bros.’ store at Paparoa at 2 a.m. They were caught by the proprietors and held until taken into custody by a constable from Waipu. They gave the names of Frank Wood and Bert Moore. After they had been locked up at Waipu both men escaped, and were recaptured a short distance away. HYDRO-ELECTRIC BOARDS. Palmerston N., March 27. At the conference of the four district hydro-electric power boards it was decided to approach the Government to raise and guarantee a combined loan for the purpose of each board.
j INCIDENT IN A RESTAURANT. Christchurch. March 27. ’ As a result of a disturbance in a Chinese restaurant yesterday* two Europeans were arrested. The allegations of the occupants were that men had entered the premises, stating that the Chinese, were gambling, and that one . Chinaman was relieved of a sum of money. The men. Leonard Wilkinson, and Thomas Ferguson, appeared in court this.morning on a charge of having stolen 5s 6d and several Chinese coins. Wilkinson was also charged with having assumed the designation of a detective. The case was adjourned, bail I being allowed. J EVIDENCE OF ASSAULT. Hamilton, March 27. A young man entered a Chinese fruiterer’s shop and' asked for cigarettes and was told they were not for sale. A disturbance followed, concerning which reports are conflicting, but as a result the man, named Grahame, had a hand severely cut by a knife, said to have been wielded by a Chinaman. The little finger was almost severed. Grahame was .removed to the hospital.
