Mr. E. Dixon, M.P. for Patea, left for Wellington by the mail train yesterday morning. Mr. Arthur Gibson, of Dalziel Road, Eltham, is leaving the district, after forty years’ residence, to retire in Wanganui. ' A Dunedin message reports the death of Mr. J. M.'Stevenson, Mayor of Port Chalmers. He was well-known in yachting circles.

A London message reports the death of Father Hopkins, the sailors’ apostle. He was prominently identified with the union of sailors and firemen. Messrs. J. B. Murdoch and A. Lees, chairman and secretary of the T. J. Joll Dairy Company, left for Wellington yesday morning on business connected with the company. Mr. F. A. Tyrer, who nas been on a holiday to the King Country for the past few weeks, returned to Stratford by the mail train last night. He has benefited in health by the change. > Mr. D. D. O’Connor, who controls the New Zealand rights of the DempseyCarpentier fight film, arrived in' New Plymouth yesterday in connection with the New Plymouth season at the Empire Theatre. Mr. A. Morton, president of the New Zealand National Dairy Association, left yesterday morning by the mail train for Wellington, where he will endeavor to secure additional shipping space for cheese.

Mr. H. Belcher was a passenger yesterday for Wellington en route to the Old Country, leaving Wellington early on Wednesday morning by the Athenic. He will probably be away for six months, or more.

Mr. O. E. Burton, of Papatoetoe, has been appointed by the New Zealand Alliance as special organiser in connection .with .work 'among young people, the churches, and generally to organise for the prohibition party in view of flhe poll to be held this year. Mr. Burton, who is a returned soldier. Holding a double decoration, is the author of “The Official History of the Auckland Regiment” and other works. Mr. Burton has befn engaged for some time in connection with Y.M.C.A. work in Wellington. The death occurred at Auckland yesterday afternoon of Mr. Frederick J. Burgess, brother of Mr. C. H. Burgess, of New’ Plymouth. The late Mr. Burgess was formerly a magistrate g,nd warden in the Thames district, previously occupying the same positions in the Otago mining district. In recent years he was chairman of the Military Service Appeal Board, and for his services jn this connection he received the 0.8. E. The deceased was about 70 years of age. • Messrs. C. H. and Arthur Burgess leave to-night for Auckland to attend the funeral
