LIBRAKIAN APPOINTED. Mr. Joseph Norrie, of Devonport, Auckland, has been appointed by the New Plymouth Borough Council to the position of librarian and curator at the Carnegie Institute. Originally there were 94 applicants, which were subsequently reduced to three by the Carnegie Institute Committee, and the final choice was made by the council last night. Mr. Norrie, who is a native of Aberdeen. Scotland, and 39 years of age, joined the staff of the Aberdeen Public Library on leaving school, as an assistant in the reference and lending departments. Having been promoted to the post of principal male assistant, he was successful, in 1901, in obtaining an appointment as deputy librarian in the public libraries of Walthamstow, London. In 1903 he was appointed from a large number of candidates to the office of librarian of the Kingston District Library, Glasgow, and in 1911 was promoted to the librarianship of Bridgeton Library, one of the largest district libraries in Glasgow. A further advance was made by Jra*. Norrie in 1912, when the Corporation of Glasgow appointed him to the position of librarian of Stirling’s Library. The library, which was re-organised under his guidance, contained over 60,000 volumes. In 1914 he was among the three candidates recommended by the Glasgow Libraries Committee io the corporation for the position of city librarian of the Glasgow public libraries. In 1915 Mr. Norrie joined the army and served in France until 1919, subsequently coming to New Zealand.
