DISTRICT OF POTENTIALITIES NEED FOR THE RAILWAY. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE TOUR. (By Wire.—Special Reporter.) Ohura, March 9. The Taranaki Chamber of Commerce party continued its tour yesterday afternoon. The Moki saddle was found to be slipping after the rain and chain* were put on the cars. This hill be ing safely negotiated a delightful ter mile drive followed through the Tangarakau Gorge. Members of the party who have been through other gorget say the Tangarakau is infinitely mor» beautiful than any other. It is wile country and practically all standing bush, but the roads are in good order. Nearing Ohura the country is more settled and cultivated. Ohura wai reached at 5.30 p.m., and the party wm met by prominent townspeople. In th< evening an informal gathering tool place. This morning a fifteen mile drive wat made out past Matiere to the railheat at Tuhua. About twenty-five men an on the work and plate-laying is proceed ing. The Matiere sawmills and the Egmont Box Company’s mills w a ere inspected. Between them they employ a , hundred men and are turning out about 34,000 feet of timber daily. The return drive was made via the Otangiwai settlement, the party arriving at Ohura for lunch. In the afternoon the party attended the sale of Newton King, IXd., and met the settlers. The preconceived ideas of the Ohura as a broken, semi-settled district were dissipated, for it is a prosperous looking district, with the land well cultivated. When the railway is through it wrll mean an immense asset, ft* Ohura has great potentialities. The fl niem'bers of the party will be the guests ■ of the settiers at dinner to-night and leave for Awakino, via Piopio, tomorrow.
