. POULTRY SETTLEMENT By Telegraph.—Press Association Palmerston N., bast Night. At to-night's meeting of the New Zealand Poultry Association, at which 60 delegates were present from all parts of New Zealand, z Mr. J. B. Merrett (Christchurch), secretary of? the association, gave notice of motion “that the Government be requested to hold over the cutting up of the Avonhead settlement for returned soldier* until Colonel Young and the chief -Government poultry expert visit the New South Wales poultry settlements and obtain the fullest information, and investigate the desirability of a similar poultry settlement at Avonhead.” MR. MASSEY AT WAIAPU. Gisborne, March 7. Mr. Massey visited the Waiapu district yesterday "and was received at a large Native gathering, at which reference was made to the loyal part played by the Ngatiporus in /early days, and the great sacrifice the Native race made in the late war. Representations were made of the urgency of the harbor works at Hicks Bay, in view of the establishment of the freezing works recently opened. Mr. Massey promised to give all possible assistance, and spoke optimistically regarding the country’s future. The Premier returns ,to Gisborne this afternoon, and will be accorded a public reception. Business premises are closed for the occasion. VESSEL ASHORE. Wanganui, March 7. As the steamer Gale was entering the port from Wellington an hour after high water this morning the steering gear became defective and the vessel sheered on to the north mole. It is expected that she will be floated at high water to-day. As far as ascertainable the vessel is undamaged. . WANGANUI WOOLLEN MILLS. Wanganui, Match 7. A meeting of the directors of the Wanganu» woollen mills decided that as financial conditions were improving and stabilising to proceed with the erection and equipping of a 30 loom mill. The latest advice shows that the price of machinery at home has been reduced and the action of the directors in suspending operations till a fall in prices . has been amply justified.
