H.M.S. CHATHAM.
LAST DAY OF VISIT. i J NO SHORE LEAVE GIVEN. Fine weather favored H.M.S. Chatham for the last day of her visit to New Plymouth, but the arrangements made for the entertainment of the officers and men had to be abandoned, as no shore leave was granted yesterday, owing to the vessel leaving earlier tiian expected. The «ea, which was choppy on Monday, was moderately smooth yesterday, and the wind, which had been blowing from the north, changed to the west. Yesterday afternoon three private launches plied for hire between the wharf and the cruiser and a number of people made the trip. The Harbor Board’s launch was used to convey pupils of the New Plymouth Boys’ High School out to the Chatham during the afternoon, the boys being taken out in batches of forty. As the men were not given shore leave the motor trips to Inglewood and the mountain, together with the afternoon tea at Kawaroa, were cancelled. As some foodstuffs had ‘been prepared, these were sent out to the vessel before she sailed. The visit of the Chatham has been rather a disappointing one, both to the general public and to the naval men, who had no opportunity to come ashore during the two days’ stay. The only men from the vessel -who landed were the members of a party of 20 who came ashore on duty yesterday morning. The Chatham sailed for the Wanganui roadstead at 5.30 p.m. yesterday.
