THE COST OF LIVING.
POSITION IN BRITAIN. London, Nov. 30. According to the Ministry of Labor index-figure, the cost of living is now 103 per cent, above that of July, 1914, and the cost of food is only 100 per cent, over the pre-war figure. The Ministry say that the food cost has fallen 10 points during October, while, If “all items” are included, the fall is only 7 points. It would probably be difficult to convince most housewives that these statements are facts. The prices quoted for meat, for instance, by the Ministry, would not be accepted by any prosperous retail butcher. However, the reduction is quoted in meat, bacon, butter, bread, margarine* cheese, potatoes, sugar, and flour. All these have really been brought down slightly owing to a definite campaign against the retailers, who are loth to follow the leading or the wholesale prices. On the . other hand, some o-f the large universal stores have made a definite move in the direction of reasonable retail prices as compared with the wholesale, and the result is that they, are sending meat to all parts of the country by rail. In the case bf groceries and other provisions, the same thing applies.
