N.S.W. POLITICS.

NO LIQUOR REFERENDUM. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.^—Copyright. Sydney, Feb. 18. Replying to an interjector at Lithgow, Mr. Dooley stated that the Government would not take a liquor referendum under the present Act. He would prefer spending the £15,000,000 mentioned as compensation on public works. LABOR POLICY CRITICISED. Sydney, Feb. 18. Both the Herald and Telegraph comment on Mr. Dooley’s political speech for side-stepping the actual financial and industrial position o-f the State and ignoring the real issues to be faced. The papers declare that if the policy is carried into effect it will plunge the country deeper into the financial morass.. The Herald says that judged from the truism that finance is government and government is finance, the policy speech is not an account of the Government’s stewardship, but a cynical affront to the intelligence of electors. The Telegraph says that Mr. Dooley’s appeal is based on a succession of bribes, first to one section and then to another, and is quite consistent. The Daily Mail describes Mr. Dooley’s effort as one of the most spectacular seen for years. The only thing lacking is something in the way of an indication .how the policy is goir l ; to oe given effect to. Everybody iniist doubt the ability of Mr. Dooley or any other politician to carry it out.
