DISPOSAL OF MEAT.

CONDITIONS AT HOME. THE POOL CRITICISED. REMEDIES SUGGESTED. By Telegraph—Freis As»n.—-Copyrrfitet, Received Feb. 19, 5.5 p.m. London, Feb. 17. Wedlell’s annual review of the meat trade for 1921 states that imports of beef, mutton and lamb totalled 917,414 tone, an increase of 100,000 tons ae compared with 1920, amounting to 47, per cent, of the total consumption of the United Kingdom. It strongly criticises the New Zealand pool and says the whole idea requires much more careful scientific thinking out than it appears to have had before it can be accepted as a likely panacea for the preeent ills of the trade. The review says that stricter grading, the elimination of inferior qualities, the amalgamation of small lots into merchantable lines, a reduction of the number of loading portsj visited, an extension of the shipping season and better regulation of sailings will do much to remove some of the disabilities under which the trade still labors. Also more must be done at this end to facilitate discharge and utilise the outports intelligently, improve railway transport, reduce storage and other charges and discriminate between weak and strong holders as the selling agents increase the popularity of New Zealand meat by extensive advertising or sustained propaganda.—Aus.-N.Z.
