SALES TAX PROPOSAL. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyrlgtt. Received Feb. 19, 11.5 p.m. Washington, Feb. 18. Opposition to a sales tax to raise bonus revenue is increasing, due to the unpopularity of the scheme. The Republican leaders are suggesting several schemes as substitutes for a sales tax. Representative Fitzgerald to-day ddvised a plan proposing to increase the advantages of Government insurance for ex-soldiers, thus providing a compromise on a cash bonus. Mr. Fitzgerald also advocated the issuance of Treasury centificates bearing four and a •quarter per cent, interest, instead of a cash bonus; the certificates would be retired when the conditions of the country justified it. LECTURER NOT WANTED. Received Feb. 19, 5.5 p.m. San Francisco, Feb. 8. On orders of the Japanese Government the Japanese Consul refused to vise the passport of Mrs. Margaret Sanger, head of the Birth Control League, who was about to sail for Tokio to lecture on birth control. Mrs. Sanger is thus unable to obtain a passage. The Consul announced that the Japanese Department of Home Affairs forbade her to land in Nipponese territory. THE LANDRU CASE. Received Feb. 19, 11.5 p.m. Paris, Feb. 19. The Procurator-General doubts the authenticity of the testimony relating to the burial of Heon at Montreal, and he considers there is no occasion to review Landru’s case. STEEL WORKS CLOSE. Received Feb. 19, 5.5 p.m. London, Feb. 18. The Armstrong Whitworth Company have closed their steel works at Newcastle., employing 800 men, owing to the cost of production being considerably higher than customers are willing to pay. POLITICS IN ITALY. Received Feb. 19, 5.5 p.m. Rome, Feb. 18. The Chamber of Deputies, by 297 votes to 107, refused a vote of confidence in Signor Bonomi. It is believed that Signor Bonomi will be asked to form a new Ministry, with adequate representation of Democrats.
