The senior gaune will be played on the New Plymouth High School grounds, commencing at 10.30 a.m., and the junior fixture will take place at Bayly Park, Hawera. The Northern team selected was as follows: ■ —Clarke, Nicoll, Newbold (New Plymouth), Robertson, R. B. McDonald (Western Park) ; P. Sarten (Urenui), Bewley, Quilliam, Papps, Bottrill (Old Boys), C. Foreman (Urenui). Jt is understood that Quilliam is unable to jflay, and his place as wicket-keeper will be filled by the inclusion of Stainton. The following have been selected to play for South -Pratt. McCarthy, Jarvis (Hawera), Cole, Bain, Little (Elthaiai), Penny (Okaiawa), Haynes, Maunsell, A. J. Hughes and H. Hughes (Manaia). Emergencies: VVorrall (Hawera), Mair (Kaponga), Neilson (Hawera), and Stewart. (Manaia,). The junior team will travel by the mail train to Hawera, and the following players have been selected :—Cameron, G. Carey, Fitzpatrick (Harbor Works), Kinsella, Osborne (New Plymouth), Maudsley, Kettle (Waltara), Crapper (Old Boys), W, O’Donnell (Bell Block), Lash (High School), Bullott (Western Park). Emergencies : Trevalla, Fletcher, Griffin. The selectors, Messrs. Palmer, Dennis, Stainton (seniors), and Messrs. Stevenson and Dennis (juniors) are to be congratulated upon the all-round excellence of the representative teams selected to uphold the honor of North Taranaki in tteir respective matches to-day. "New blood” has been freely introduced, especially so in the selection of the junior team, where Mr. Stevenson's experience as a player in town and country is clearly shown, he having obtained a more intimate knowledge of the capabilities of the various players than selectors sometimes possess. Several prominent junior players were not available ; nevertheless, the team has been very favorably commented upon by followers of the game
The feature in tte selection of the senior team is the exclusion of Osborne ; he might easily have been first instead of last of the five Old Boys’ players selected, he having few superiors with the ball in North Taranaki, and certainly none in the field; neither is his batting weak. Foreman also has claims to preference over several of those included, his bowling at times being high-class, and he is also a reliable batsman and fielder. Newbold's inclusion .’s pleasing, he being a useful change bowler and a finished batsman. With such experienced players as Nicoll, Robertson, Clarke, Bewley and Bottrill as its backbone the team may be relied upon to give a good acaount of itself, and there is no reason why those new to representative honors should not justify the confidence of the selectors. , At Patea on Wednesday Patea defeated Hawera by 91 to 67. For Patea Gibbs (22), Findlay (14) and Harding, Harrison and Weir (13 each) were the highest scorers, and for Hawera Cob (28) and Warroll (11). Tinney and Cunningham secured the best bowling averages for Patea, and Worrall and Oates for Hawera. MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. TOUR OF ENGLISH TEAM. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. At to-night's meeting of the management committee of the New Zealand Cricket Council it was decided to play the North v. South Island match at Christchurch on March 10. 11 and 13. Mr. K. Tucker was appointed selector of the North Island team and Mr. R. Martin (Otago) of the South Island team. Christchurch was selected owing to the fact that the Basin Reserve at Wellington was not available for a Saturday match till April. Correspondence was received from Mr. A. C. MacLaren stating that the team he ’’ was bringing to New Zealand was, in his opinion, the strongest amateur side that had left England, including the majority of the team which defeated the Australians at Eastbourne. Correspondence from Australia regarding the proposed Australian tour was received. The committee expressed regret that in spite of endeavors the tour has not been arranged
