THE TRANIS.

NEW TIME-TABLE DISCUSSED. ALTERATIONS PROPOSED. The opinion that the present tramway service in New Plymouth is too fast for the amount of traffic is expressed by the tramways manager (Mr. R. H. Bartley) in his monthly report. The revenue in January was £2130 5s Bd, the number of passengers carried being 189,587. Of this the Morley Street branch earned £lO5 Is 4d, carrying 13,264 passengers. Tlie revenue per car mile was 24.86 d and the passengers per mile averaged 9.22, the average fare per passenger being 2.69 d. The engineer comments as follows: “Comparing these records with those for the corresponding period of the previous year we find that the revenue has increased by £3l 5s M and the additional passengers carried are 3106. However, when we compare the other items it will be found that the revenue per mile has decreased by 4.19 pence, and that the passengers per mile have decreased by 1.53; also the average fare per passenger is .011 pence less. The above decreases are due principally to the time-table now in operation being too fast for the traffic offering, and an adjustment in same must be variously considered .in the near future.” Referring to the general work of his department, Mr. Bartley states: “The work in connection with the overhauling of/ cars was eased off during the hoiiaay periou and the overhauling of the overhead gear concentrated on, with the result that this is now in first-class order. There are several places in the track which must have attention before the wet weather seta in, and thia will be attended to. Morley Street route has been operated on the one-man car system since December 1 laat, and, generally speaking, has given satisfaction. There are several points, however, which have been noted, and where distinct improvements can be made these will have consideration at the first opportunity. The Birney cars are in constant operation aJid are giving every satisfaction to date.’
