ELTHAM.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) i February 16. A special meeting of the Borough Council was held last night. Present: The Mayor, Crs. Bridger, Campbell, Carter and Cuff. The business was to consider the tenders lodged for the painting of the town hall, and for footpath formation. Mr. J. \V. Harrison’s tender of £66 19s for painting the town hall was accepted, there being three tenders. The tender of Mr. A. Peebles ( £42 10s) for footpath formation was the lowest of three tenders. and was accepted. The work of clearing up the debris of the recent fire has been continued apace for some days, and it is a pitiable sight to see the skeletons of valuable implements, etc., being loaded on lorries bound for the rubbish tip. Mr. Wilkinson is doubtless a heavy loser, and Mr. Goldstone estimates his loss at between t“00() and £BOOO. Very little has be-Jn salvaged from Mr. Wilkinson’s stock, and nothing at all from Mr. Goldstone’s. The fire insurance assessor has estimated the loss sustained by Mr. E. C. Goldstone, as the result of the fire, at between £7OOO and £BOOO over and above the insurances, and Mr. Wilkinson’s at £9OOO beyond his insurances. The N.Z. Aero Transport Company's Avro aeroplane left for Auckland at 11 o’clock this morning. Messrs. Mercer (pilot), Salter (mechanic) and Mrs. Mercer being on board.
