PARK FOR FITZROY.

HARBOR RESERVE WANTED. The Fitzroy people are desirous of acquiring the New Plymouth Harbor Board reserve near the foreshore for the purpose of making a park on similar lines to those at Kawaroa and East End. A deputation, consisting of the-Mayor (Mr. F. E. Wilson), Crs. A, J. Kibby, and R. L. Parkin (also members of the Fitzroy Ratepayers’ Association), together with Mr. P. E. Stainton (a member of the same association), and Mr. F. T. Bellringer manager), waited upon the Harbor Board at yesterday’s meeting with this object in view. Mr. Parkin explained that the Fitzroy people had already effected various ini-’ provements at the reserve, including the spending of £2OO for concrete bathing sheds, but naturally wanted to know ■whether the reserve could be put aside as a park before anything further was done. If this was agreed to, then they were willing to help financially and with voluntary labor. Mr. C. E. Bellringer desired to know whether the Fitzroy committee would undertake to carry out certain improvements in a specified time if the reserve was set aside for a. park. Mr. Parkin said that he was certain this would be agreed to, within reasonable limits, of course. In reply to a question, the Mayor said the borough would naturally like to incorporate these sections within its boundaries, and, if the harbor board raised no objection, would do so. The borough council wanted their boundaries io extend to the Waiwakaiho instead of taka sweep inwards, as they did, nearer the sea.

Mr. Connett, speaking on behalf of the Taranaki County Council, said that body had no objection to offer to the scheme.

Mr. C. E. Bellringer suggested the first step was for the borough to take over the reserve, to which step Mr. Maxwell said some members were opposed. It was eventually decided that the matter be referred to the reserves committee to report to the- next meeeing rf the board, and the deputation withdrew.
