THE HEW POPE.
CORONATION CEREMONY, A SPLENDID SPECTACLE, PRECEDENTS BROKEN. By Talegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright. Rome, Feb. 12. The Pope was crowned at St. Peter’s. It was an impressive and splendid spectacle. The elaborate coronation ceremonial occupied five hours, the Pope showing considerable fatigue towards the close. Eighty thousand people assembled at St. Peter’s. Many women fainted in the crush. . The Pope was borne above ‘hejjpeads of the people on the sedia gestatoria and received the adoration of the Cardinals and other dignitaries. Solemn mass was celebrated and then the tiara was placed on His Holiness’ head by Cardinal Bisletti. After the ceremony the Pope proceeded to the Basilica and blessed a throng estimated at 300,000 in the square. A procession of Cardinals and 100 Bishops preceded the Pope up the principal aisles. A disappointing feature of the ceremony was the lack'- of modern music. The ‘simple plain chant was used and sounded m» 'neholy and lugubrious instead of joyful and inspiring. The most important feature was the blessing which the Pope, surrounded !by 51 Cardinals, gave from the external balcony, a method unprecedented since 1846.’ To-day’s events are regarded as marking a new step in the relations between the Church and the Italian Government. It is the first time since the Papacy’s loss of the temporal power that St. Peter’s Square has been filled by such an enormous crowd, and the first time since 1870 that the bugles of the Italian army have heralded the Pontiff s appearance.
