OBITUARY.
MR. EDWARD CODD. Mr. Edward Codd, whose death, at the advanced age of 84 years, was notified in the News of yesterday, was one of the band of emigrants from Lincolnshire, England, who came to Taranaki in response to the advocacy of the late Mr. Burton during the ’seventies. He, with his wife, the late Mrs. Codd, and their three sons, left his native home in Lincolnshire, in December, 1875, arrived in Wellington. in February, 1876 by the ship “Hurunui” and by the s.s. Taranaki reached New Plymouth the same monfh. For a time the family made Inglewood their home, then a deferred payment property on Dudley Road was secured and developed amidst the hardships of those days, when roads were non-existent, and cash for farm produce hardly procurable. Despite all obstacles, however, the family kept going. The sons set up homes for themselves, and, when Mr. Codd senr. sold, his original holding he went to live with Mr. H. J. Codd, his second son, till he moved into Inglewood. Here he resided practically till the end came, Mrs. Codd having predeceased him by several years. That he earned the confidence of his neighbors is shown by the fact that for several years he represented them on the Moa Road Board, and was, in fact, a member of that body when the first loan of £6OOO, under the Advances to Local Bodies Act, was raised in 1886-7. As a sturdy pioneer, quiet, unassuming and minding his own business, his memory is deserving of respect. He is survived by his sons, Mr. B. Codd, of Auckland, and Messrs. H. J. and Walter Codd, of Inglewood, as well as by eight grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren, to whom the sympathy of their many friends is extended (two grandsons, it should be mentioned, made the supreme sacrifice in the late war). Of such were the pioneers of this country; may the newcomers now reaching our shores prove to be of equal value to “God’s Own Country” as settlers and citizens.
