KILLING A PIG.
A MOKAU INCIDENT. Writes “The Cutter” from Mokau: -It is dull in Mokau on a wet day—perhaps not quite as dull as on a “dry” day, but still dull. Wandered out in the rain on Tuesday evening to where the Mokau Dilly News says the flounders flounder, but found instead Hori sitting on a splash in the river. Further investigation disclosed the gent named after Ernie George’s alleged racehorse to be sitting on a pig submerged in a couple of feet of water.
“What are you doing out there, z Hori?” I asked.
“I kill te pig—taihoa—pretty soon now he trowned.”
“Why not cut his throat and have done with it?” I said.
Hori knocked off drowning the porker long enough to give me a look of contempt mingled with pity—the sort of thing you keep in New Plymouth for the fellows trying to sell oil shares.
“By korry, I t’ink you te broke that pring up te case of whisky on the front seat of te coach last Friday.” I was, and already had recognised the disadvantages of advertising in Mokau, but was puzzled at Hori’s reference, until he went on—
“S’pose I cut te troat, ’Bout ten minute after te first squeal all te Maori come along and say: ‘Hori, how about te pit of pork?’ No pruddy fear; I trown him!”
