BOROUGH AFFAIRS.
NEW PLYMOUTH COUNSIL. EXTENSION OF WATER MAINS. The New Plymouth Borough Council met last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr. F. E. Wilson), Crs. J. Kibby, V. Griffiths, E. Dingle, W. Rumba!!, R. L. Parkin, J. Brown, and R. A. Large. The council considered the report of the engineer (Mr. W. H. Cook) on the proposed expenditure under the £lO,OOO waterworks loan. The schedule, as published last week, was dealt with seriatim, and after a number of amendments were made it was decided that the engineer bring down the revised schedule at next meeting. The petition of four residents of the Frankley Road for the extension of the water main, consideration of which was deferr d from last meeting, was again before the council. Five residents of the Brooklands Road urgently petitioned the council for the extension of the water main to their residences. The signatories were R. W. Davies, Walter Scott, A. Avann, J. W. H. Martin, and Newton King. Consideration was held over till next meeting. ELECTRIC LIGHTING. Application for the installation 07 electric light to a residence beyond the Waiwakaiho bridge was made by Mr. N. Solomon.
The electrical engineer (Mr. R. H. Bartley) stated that the residence was outside the borough and he asked for the council’s ruling on the question of such applications being entertained,/ It was decided that connections be made in cases in which applications are already in. FITZROY FIRE BRIGADE. The New Plymouth Fire Board notified that they had decided to adhere to their former resolution to disband the Fitzroy brigade as a separate unit as from March 31 next. A copy of In-i spector Hugo’s letter recommending this course was also forwarded for the information of the council. Cr. Kibby asked if the council had paid any compensation for the gear that was taken over by the Fire Board. The general manager: No. Cr. Kibby said his point was that it appeared some hundreds of pounds worth of Fitzroy property was taken over, and the question was as to whom this belonged. The Mayor said he understood this point was being looked into, and that a report would be made later. MISCELLANEOUS. In response to a request from the Drivers’ Union, it was decided that employees under this heading be allowed a holiday on Thursday, February 9, instead of on Anniversary Day, as stipulated in the award.
