A Melbourne cablegram records, the death of Sir Joseph Hood, a Judgs of the Supreme Court. /
A London cable says that Mr. Godfrey Turner, a New Zealand journalist employed on the London Press, died suddenly. Mr. F. Bilton, of the Inglewood branch of the Farmers’ Co-op. has been appointed manager of the Eltham branch.
Mr. J. W. Deem, Government Fields Supervisor, who was recently appointed to take charge of the Moumahaki State Farm in addition to other experimental work, has taken up residence at Moumahaki. A Press cable from London states that Major Gw illy m Lloyd George, the Prime Minister’s son, will contest the Pembrokeshire seat as a CoalitionLiberal.
At Waverley on Friday night the Rev. D. Mclvor, who is leaving shortly for Marton, was entertained by the people of the district and presented with a cheque. Mrs. Mclvor was also the recipient of a presentation from the Patea lady members of the congregation.
Forty-five yeqfrs of pioneer church work in New* Zealand is the record of the late Archdeacon Harper who died in London a week ago, at the age of 89. His .first cure was that of the extensive portion of the Christchurch diocese between the Waimakiriri and the Rakaia, about 900 square miles of rough country. For about nine years Archdeacon. Harper remained in that charge, and then went to England to select clergymen, for the diocese. Returning to’ New Zealand, he was appointed Archd.eacon of Westland and vicar, of Hokitika in 1866. On the West Coast, which then had a population of about 30,000, he quickly earned the esteem and affection of the miners. He was called to Timaru in 1875, his departure from the coast being marked by general regret. He was made Archdeacon of Timaru as well as of Westland. For 36 years he ministered in Timaru. In 1911 he resigned the cure and went to London.
