SURPLUS OF COAL.
RAILWAYS CANCEL CONTRACT. By Telegrnph—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. The laupiri Extended mine at Huntly is idle to-day owing to a notification »y tho Railway Department that it could not continue purchasing 500 tons ot steam coal as under the existing contract.! In reply to representations by the Hon. E. W. Alison the department states that owing to the large stocks of col* in hand and to arrive the contract coui* not bo continued. This statement re* fors, of course, to the extensive committments made by the Government owing to the miners recent “go slow.* It is expected the Rotowaro mine will be idle to-morrow. The company stated the termination of the contract will necessitate each of its mines being idle one day a week.
