In reply to representations by the Hon. E. W. Alison the department states that owing to the large stocks of col* in hand and to arrive the contract coui* not bo continued. This statement re* fors, of course, to the extensive committments made by the Government owing to the miners recent “go slow.* It is expected the Rotowaro mine will be idle to-morrow. The company stated the termination of the contract will necessitate each of its mines being idle one day a week.
