SWIMMING.

LIFE-SAVING EXAMINATIONS. SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES. for Royal Life-Saving Society’s certificates were held at the municipal baths, New Plymouth, last night. Mr. B. S. Knox, of Christchurch, who represents the North Taranaki Head Centre on the Dominion executive, is at present paying a visit to New Plymouth, and conducted the examinations, assisted by Dr. Wade and Mr. N. A. Christiansen. Mr. Knox is engaged on a tour of the Dominion with a view to standardising the. tests in the various centres. The successful candidates were Messrs. I. McHardy, who gained the society’s bronze medallion, and K. Kirk, who passed the award of merit test.

There was a good attendance of the public, and the centre had also availed themselves of the opportunity to conduct a number of swimming races. The weather Was somewhat against -competitors, but good entries were received. The officials who controlled the sports were: Messrs. A. R. Standish and N. Stephenson (judges). P. Mathieson (call steward), F. J. Eggleton (starter), and V. Dalgleish (time-keeper). The results w’ere:— 33 Yards.—First heat: K. Stohr 1, H. Hoffmann 2; time 21 2-ssec. Second heat: B. Boon 1, R. Bailey 2; time, 22 l-osec. Final: K. Stohr 1, Boon 2; time, 21sec.

Men’s 100 Yards. —Boon 1, R. Morrison 2. Time. Imin. 24 3-ssec. • Boys (under 18) 33 Yards.—Rickard 1. McHardy 2. Time, 22 4-ssec. An interesting item during the evening was an exhibition of diving given by 5 Messrs. P. Mathieson and D. Sykes. To-day a reel demonstration will be given at Ngamotu beach, commencing at 5 p.m.,. and a further examination will be held at the baths to-night. Later Mr. Knox confers with instructors and examiners on matters relating to tfie work of the centre.
