MOTOR STRIKES TRAIN.
~ ACCIDENT AT CROSSING. 7 ONE MOTORIST INJURED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. A motor car ran into the second express from the South at the Selwyn crossing at 7 o’clock to-night, resulting in injuries to one of the three occupants, the total destruction of the car and damage to the Governor-Gefaeral’s private railway carriage. The occupants of the car were T. A. Lackner, C. lE. Johnston and Thyne, the . driver. Lackner received injuries to his back and hip, but the others escaped unhurt. The train was promptly pulled up and Dr. Wilson, superintendent of the Wellington hospital, who was a passenger, attended to the injured man. Subsequently he was placed on board the train and conveyed to Christchurch, thence to the hospital. The setting sun was against the motorists and they did not see the train till they were almost on the crossing. The car was slewed round in the same direction as the train was travelling, but the bonnet hit a post at a cattle stop and the rear of the car was caught by the train and smashed against the fence of the cattle stop. The gas and electrical equipment and the step of the vice-regal carriage were torn off, also the woodwork and rear step of the next coach, containing Lord Jellicoe’s staff. The Governor-General walked back to the scene of the accident and made enquiries as to the state of the injured man.
