BUTTER SURPLUS.

HEAVY SALES MADE. BIG REDUCTION OF STOCK. THE DANGER REMOVED. By Tfclegrapb. -Pt*m Aasocietiea Wellington, Last Night. An important announcement in regard to the stocks of New Zealand butter on the Home market was made by the Prime Minister at to-day’s conference of producers to discuss the meat pool. Mr. Massey stated that he had receive ed the following cablegram from the High Commissioner;— “I understand from the Board ot Trade that a good demand has been experienced during the last few days and the unsold stocks of New Zealand butter have been reduced to 1000 tons. Australian is in slower demand and the stocks altogether now stand at 8000. I presume, therefore, that further action is unnecessary on> the part of New Zealand.” “That means,” remarked the Prime Minister, “that the stock of New Zealand butter has been reduced from 8000 tons to 1000 tons, and 1000 tons is a mere trifle so far as the British market is concerned.” (Applause). He had been scared, he added later, about the butter producers during the last two or three weeks. He hac thought the Government might hav* had to come to their aid, but that wat not necessary now. Had it, however, been necessary the risk would have had. to be taken, and he did not think there was much risk in the Government backing up the producers of the country.
