IRISH TREATY.

LULL OVER HOLIDAYS. FEELING OF THE PEOPLE. MAJORITY FOR TREATY. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Dec. 26, 8.55 p.m. New York, Dec. 25. The Chicago Tribune’s Dublin correspondent says unofficial canvasses show that twenty-six South Ireland counties are unanimous for the ratification of the Irish Treaty, and it is believed a nation-wide referendum would show ninety per cent, of the people favor ratification. The New York World’s Dublin correspondent states there were few churches in Ireland yesterday where the clergy failed to ask their congregations to pray for an early peace. Bishop Brown said: “Are we going back to the hideous conditions of the past two or fihree years, and the tyranny, bondage and slavery which our forefathers suffered, or will we became a free State, with our own Parliament invested with full power to rule Ireland.” He added that ninetyfive per cent, of the people favored tfce ratification of the treaty. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. DAIL EIREANN SESSION. BICKERINGS AND INDECISION. Received Dee. 25, 5.5 p.m. London, Dec. 24. The Daily Chronicle says that, despite a few striking speeches in the Dail Eireann, it has been a singular prolix ramshackle of unpractical and undignified' debate, but we must remember that most of the members have not had previous experience of public work on an elective body. Many people in England have been deeply shocked at things said in the debate, not only by opponents of the treaty, but by supporters. They have spoken as if they had no desire to abide by it loyally. The Morning Post states all Unionist papers in Belfast, commenting on the Dail Eireann’s bickerings and indecision, adopt the view that such proceedings amply justify Ulstermen’s emphatic refusal to join an Irish Free State. The Dail Eireann’s internal dissensions illustrate Southern Ireland’s incapacity to manage its own affairs.
