BRUTAL CRIME TN IRELAND. By Telegraph.—Tress Assn —Copyright. Received Dec. 25, 5.5 p.m. London.. Dec. 24. A special court at Charlestown, County Mayo, committed for trial Herbert Craig and Hugh Leonard, both butchers, on a charge of attempted murder of Gallagher, a local Catholic priest, being the first case of an attack on a priest recorded in Western Ireland. According to the evidence, Craig had been nursing a grudge for eight years, owing to Gallagher’s public reference to Craig’s conduct with a girl. Craig and Leonard, while intoxicated, waylaid Gallagher during the night, the former stabbing him In the ribs. His cries brought assistance, and the assailants decamped. Aiw.-N.Z. Cable
