CORRESPONDENCE
HOSPITAL ADMINISTRATION. Sir,—The resolution proposed by Mr. Gilmour at the recent meeting of the hospital board calls for comment. The fact of its using necessary to pass such a resolution is indicative of weakness on the part of the board, past and present, and the necessity for up-to-date methods being adopted, and an infusion of new blood upon the board. I understand that tie present secretary is a capable and able officer, and that the public will be the looser if bis services are not availed of to tl’elr fullest capacity. He should be in touch with all the details of the institution and its accounts, and his word shoifld be law. The matron, medical superintendent, honorary staff, farm manager, house steward, housekeeper, caretaker, and matron of '-he home for elderly people, also the nurses, domestic staff and rank and file, should be absolutely subservient to him. The appointment of a so-called general manager is quite uncalled for. All that is required is that the secretary should assert himself, and that any action taken by him (in his capacity of secretary) in the interests of the board shall be supported loyally by every member of the board. The next thing necessary is that the salary shall be increased in proportion to the responsibility of the position.—l am, etc., “PRO BONO PUBLICO.’’ New Plymouth, December 20.
