SYDNEY CITY ELECTIONS. RETOBMERS' BIG GAINS. By Telegraph,—Press Assn.—Copyright. Sydney, Doc. 1. The City elections resulted in the defeat of Labor. Exceptional interest was taken, and the poll was very heavy. It closed at 7.30, and the counting whs not finished till very late. Labor lost four seats and the' Independents two. which the Civic Reformers gained, giving the Civic Reformers 16 and Labor 10. The previous council consisted of 13 lAbor, 11 Civic Reformers and two IndependThe Lord Mayor, Mr. Lambert, squeezed in by two votes. Dick Meagher was defeated. Received Dec. 2 7.15 p.m. Sydney, Dec. 2. The final returns in the city elections give the Reformers seventeen seats and Labor nine seats. Three recounts are necessary. In the Lord Mayor’s ward seventeen votes are separating four candidates. A Reformer beat Mr. Lambert by twelve votes and a second Reformer was five votes behind. Mr. Lambert stated that despite the exceptionally strict provisions against it there were many cases of personation and impersonators were particularly busy in the early polling hours.
